Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti, also known as Abami Eda, was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, composer, political activist and Pan-Africanist. He was the man behind the Afrobeat, an African musical genre that combined Yoruba percussion and vocals with funk and jazz. His influence on genres like world music and new wave are impossible to overstate. Because of his political activism he regularly crossed paths with the corrupt Nigerian government and police, who destroyed his home/commune and incarcerated Kuti many times over. He is singlehandedly responsible for putting African music in general and Afrobeat in partciular, on the map
