Review
I don’t have to mince too many words on this. This album is a true revelation. An impressive report on the recently started motherhood of Cleo Sol, the singer known for being part of the mysterious and brilliant SAULT.
On August 20th, 2021, the singer shared the following message on Instagram:
Everything is real
I do this for the Younger me, that didn’t always speak what was on her heart & that made herself smaller to fit others ideals.
I’ve never felt as present as I do now. I’ve always tried to embrace where I am in life, but at certain points you just get lost, and don’t have the awareness to navigate yourself out and into the light. I guess life happens in waves, and thinking of that always gives me peace in the moment.
I became a mother this year, and it’s been the most transformative, uplifting, heart melting, strength giving experience thus far that led me to write this album.
We had plans to take a break but Gods got jokes and was like, now you guys create and have fun, so we did 🙏🏽☺️🤝
Mother was born, and truly it was a beautiful, growing experience. We worked with a small team of hand picked individuals, who helped make this music so special and whose intentions were aligned with the honesty that I was looking for and who trusted the vision. I want to continue this process of making music with people who are in a pure space at the time.
Creation is sacred in all forms and I’ve always respected the space that it takes you to.
Thank you @yardmanflo for seeing me, from day one, for believing in my true ever evolving self and illuminating it 💖Thank you to Ben Baptie, Tom Archer, Sophie Ellis, Graham Godfrey, Kadeem Clarke, Nathan Allen, Michael Jablonka and Alex Bonfanti, without each and every one of you showing up everyday this wouldn’t have been possible. Thank you to Chris Elliott for your lovely arrangements they give me goosebumps. To Nathaniel Cross🙏🏽 And to every single person who contributed to the record I thank you for your grace, and for showing up with pure intentions for the music.
Thank you Nathan for all you do for us, you are truly one of a kind and I cherish you like a brother. Thank you Amber & my Forever Living Originals team, you guys are amazing.
Just know being true to you and your heart is the most bravest thing you can do, you must walk in your truth, and it’s okay to be scared whilst doing so.
I hope you enjoy ‘Mother’ And I hope you find some peace.
P.s – There are a few hidden tracks 😉

Cleo Sol – Mother
That very same day the album was made available on numerous streaming services. I heard about the album by accident and was immediately grabbed by it. It’s a moving tale of her early motherhood and a reflection on her own mother. Confrontational, warm and amazingly honest about failures from the past, and her doubts whether or not she can and will do any better.
Lyrics like
- Your bitter tongue is sharper than a knife / Cut so deep inside / Don’t care with a smile / That I am a child
- Ain’t no time to cry / I’ll fix what’s broken and live my life authentically / It’s not far away / The road to peace happens when I pray / I’m not asleep / There’s bigger dreams that didn’t fit for you but will fit for me
- Mama, please, stop acting twenty-three / You’ve got responsibilities / Are you still stuck in your teens?
are heartbreaking and sad, yet the album is very postive. Criticism is accompanied by understanding and forgiveness, and beautiful messages, like
- I wrote a letter to myself and it was full of promises / One for you and one for me / Love is not our enemy
- Know that you are loved / Even if you don’t love yourself
- We don’t know what life will bring / But a good heart will bring you the best things / Something to laugh about, nothing but peace / A moment of happiness can last forever
The gratitude and pride are well versed by Cleo Sol: Thank you for sending me an angel straight from Heaven / When my hope was gone, you made me strong / Thank you for being amazing, teaching me to hold on / Blessed from above with a heart full of love.
The album is intimate, sincere and instrumentally impressive. Soulful jazz or jazzy soul, for me it’s thé discovery of 2021. Listen and shiver!
