Introduction
To balance the main article, the A Pop Life Panel members also compiled a list of their least favorite Prince albums. Before going to the list, some remarks:
Because the numbers 4, 5 and 6 ended up with the same amount of points, this top 5 is made up of 6 titles.
With pride and sincere gratitude to Bram, Edward, Herman, Leon, Rick and Vincent, these are Prince’s 15 least favorite albums!
Prince – Planet Earth
1. Planet Earth
(2007)
Remarks
Bram |
What a letdown.
(okay: Planet Earth (a bit over the top, but hey, I can live with this one), Somewhere Here On Earth, Chelsea Rodgers) |
Edward |
I can’t discover anything here that will make my head turn.
Certainly no crowd barriers material.
Trax like Chelsea Rodgers and Lion Of Judah are rather nice still. |
Erwin |
Completely vacuous album. Incomprehensible this came after the fantastic 3121. |
Herman |
I guess I should have known; it came with the Mail On Sunday, a rag of a newspaper. The overall sound of this is weirdly nice, as is the art-design, but to me it’s the compositions that do not gel; they just don’t make me tick, tick bang. Two songs made it to a playlist, but the rest of them are just so forgettable. |
Leon |
Ow… here are some random songs in the trashcan… let’s put them on a CD, add one OK song, Chelsea Rodgers, and call it an album. |
Rick |
|
Vincent |
|
Prince – 20Ten
2. 20Ten
(2010)
Remarks
Bram |
|
Edward |
|
Erwin |
Soulless weak album, unworthy of Prince. |
Herman |
There is nothing on here that makes me groove; the funk sounds rather lame, on this. The lyrics sound uninteresting. Which is quite something, as Prince’s voice is my favest in the world. |
Leon |
An album that you just forget, literally. I saw a title from that album a few times, I thought it was a new song… it turned out to be from that album. Elevator music, uninspired, vague… just not what you want to hear… not even when it comes for free with a newspaper. |
Rick |
|
Vincent |
|
Prince – HITnRUN Phase One
3. HITnRUN Phase One
(2015)
Remarks
Bram |
|
Edward |
Fucking hell, what an incoherent mess. Terrible album! |
Erwin |
|
Herman |
|
Leon |
|
Rick |
Another CD I hardly ever played. Prince is flirting with new music styles and sounds. In this case it hurts the quality of the songs. I usually like the experimental side of Prince, but not in this case. But with so many albums under his belt one bad one isn’t the end of the world. HITnRUN Phase Two was surprisingly different and better. |
Vincent |
|
Prince – Graffiti Bridge
4. Graffiti Bridge
(1990)
Remarks
Bram |
|
Edward |
Pffff… what a huge disappointment after a run of very successful consecutive albums in the 80s. Even the two top songs The Question Of U and Joy In Repetition can’t save the day here. An album that I haven’t listened to since 1990. |
Erwin |
|
Herman |
|
Leon |
No comment 🙂 |
Rick |
|
Vincent |
|
Prince – The Slaughterhouse
5. The Slaughterhouse
(2004)
Remarks
Bram |
I think The Chocolate Invasion is many, many times stronger.
(okay: Y Should Do That When Can Do This?) |
Edward |
|
Erwin |
|
Herman |
|
Leon |
The title itself… the music… think I played each song only once and skipped most after 15 seconds. Makes you wonder why a genius sometimes completely surprises you with rubbish. |
Rick |
|
Vincent |
|
Prince – MPLSound
6. MPLSound
(2009)
Remarks
Bram |
This album is full of lame beats.
(okay: Dance 4 Me, Ol’ School Company) |
Edward |
|
Erwin |
|
Herman |
Wedged in between two albums that I like better, this one does not contain songs or sounds I much like. Even Q-Tip can’t save this plastic pastiche. |
Leon |
|
Rick |
|
Vincent |

Interpretation and justification
So, there it is: the 6 least favorite Prince albums according to the A Pop Life Panel. Of course, there are things to be said about the list.
A total of 20 titles were nominated, of which no less than 13 were released after 2000, 6 in the 1990s and 1 in the 1980s. With the exception of 1 album, the entire top 6 is made up of albums released after 2000.
Relation to the 15 best albums
What’s the relation to the results in the main article Prince – The 15 best albums!? Of the 20 titles named here, 12 were also nominated in the personal top 15 best albums of the A Pop Life Panel members. No less than 4 of the albums in the top 6 are also mentioned in the main article Prince – The 15 best albums!.
It’s funny to see so many different opinions and preferences on Prince’s body of work.

The individual lists
All lists come with personal commentary, remarks and memories. All lists are enclosed below. Click on one or more lines below.
Prince And 3rdEyeGirl – PLECTRUMELECTRUM
Bram’s top 5 least favorite Prince albums
With each album I also mention the songs that I can appreciate, despite this category.
- Planet Earth
Planet Earth (a bit over the top, but hey, I can live with this one), Somewhere Here On Earth, Chelsea Rodgers
What a letdown.
- Plectrumelectrum
Wow, Funknroll
Nothing more interesting to be found than these two.
- MPLSound
Dance 4 Me, Ol’ School Company
This album is full of lame beats.
- The Slaughterhouse
Y Should Do That When Can Do This?
I think The Chocolate Invasion is many, many times stronger.
- Musicology
Musicology, Dear Mr. Man, Reflection
Perhaps the biggest disappointment of this list. It started with that great first single, Musicology, so promising. I think all those true funk soldiers – Kool & The Gang, Earth, Wind & Fire fans – must have been very disappointed with the rest of this album…
My hero Alan Leeds (here he is again) once described it nicely for me:
April 8th, 2007 – “Prince doesn’t write bad songs or make bad records. However he does sometimes write boring songs that even his enthusiastic performances can’t make memorable.”
Prince – Musicology
Edward’s top 5 least favorite Prince albums
- HITnRUN Phase One
Fucking hell, what an incoherent mess. Terrible album!
- Musicology
In essence, a record made for the American market. Meaningless soul. Nothing innovative, nothing exciting, nothing really. It just doesn’t work out despite the fantastic trailer: the extremely funky title track. And there it stops immediately. Too bad.
- Planet Earth
I can’t discover anything here that will make my head turn. Certainly no crowd barriers material.
Trax like Chelsea Rodgers and Lion Of Judah are rather nice still.
- Graffiti Bridge
Pffff… what a huge disappointment after a run of very successful consecutive albums in the 80s. Even the two top songs The Question Of U and Joy In Repetition can’t save the day here. An album that I haven’t listened to since 1990.
- Plectrumelectrum
Prince on guitar: usually no laughing matter. But not on this CD. Another recent junk bin of a record. The only thing I like is the instrumental title track, which, by the way, really comes to life when played live… sniff, with great melancholy thinking back to Paradiso, August 2013.
Erwin’s top 5 least favorite Prince albums
Prince & The New Power Generation – Diamonds And Pearls
- 20Ten
Soulless weak album, unworthy of Prince.
- Diamonds And Pearls
Does contain Gett Off and Money Don’t Matter 2night, but these are surrounded by horrendous monsters and the worst song Prince ever released on record: Jughead.
- Planet Earth
Completely vacuous album. Incomprehensible this came after the fantastic 3121.
- Emancipation
Well, ballads, ballads and some more ballads, complemented with poorly executed R&B. Would have made a good one-disc album.
- Musicology
The single was promising, very promising indeed, but then it all went downhill. Disappointing, especially after all the hype surrounding it.
Prince & The NPG – One Nite Alone… The Aftershow: It Ain’t Over!
Herman’s top 5 least favorite Prince albums
This part is hard to do; list my least favorite albums. I mean, I know which they are, as I never play them, but it feels a bit like bullying; I know these albums have fans. But still, that’s the brief, so I’ll list the albums I listen to the least, if ever. And I’ll even play ‘m, to find out if I still dislike them and will try to put in words what it is that irks me about them.
All of them count as albums I get bored of/irritated by when listening as a whole. Bram will be shocked to find out that The Rainbow Children is not on there, as that was an album I reacted to badly when playing it for the first time, due to Jehova Witness exclusionism and felt more than unfriendly and religiously biased in its views on women and Prince’s fans. But I have learnt to place it in its time frame, as he was shifting, always, and it seems his religious views were also. He became more mellow towards both women and fans later on in life
- 20Ten
There is nothing on here that makes me groove; the funk sounds rather lame on this. The lyrics sound uninteresting. Which is quite something, as Prince’s voice is my favest in the world.
- MPLSound
Wedged in between two albums that I like better, this one does not contain songs or sounds I much like. Even Q-Tip can’t save this plastic pastiche.
- One Nite Alone… The Aftershow: It Ain’t Over!
Where I really liked the One Nite Alone… Live! set, this felt like a really weird addition. Too many unimpressive guest spots and it just sounded messy, compared to so many other great aftershows that are out there. Not representative at all.
- HITnRUN Phase Two
Prince’s last album, filled with a sound that left me cold, even though Revelation saves it from being higher on my minus list; that one made my favorite song list. The other songs feel too doctored.
- Planet Earth
I guess I should have known; it came with the Mail On Sunday, a rag of a newspaper. The overall sound of this is weirdly nice, as is the art-design, but to me it’s the compositions that do not gel; they just don’t make me tick, tick bang. Two songs made it to a playlist, but the rest of them are just so forgettable.
Prince – Batman
Leon’s top 5 least favorite Prince albums
- Graffiti Bridge
- Planet Earth
Ow… here are some random songs in the trashcan… let’s put them on a CD, add one OK song, Chelsea Rodgers, and call it an album.
- 20ten
An album that you just forget, literally. I saw a title from that album a few times, I thought it was a new song… it turned out to be from that album. Elevator music, uninspired, vague… just not what you want to hear… not even when it comes for free with a newspaper.
- Batman
I don’t like superheroes, so maybe that’s why… Batdance is an ok song, but I always fast forward to the guitar solo.
- The Slaughterhouse
The title itself… the music… think I played each song only once and skipped most after 15 seconds. Makes you wonder why a genius sometimes completely surprises you with rubbish.
Prince – Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic
Rick’s top 5 least favorite Prince albums
- Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic
I listened to all the Prince albums while making my top 15. And it became very clear why this album found my CD player only once or twice. I love the live after show version of the title track. But the studio version is a disappointment and that’s one of the best tracks on the album. I don’t like the songs or the production. The remix cd Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic was equally disappointing.
With Diamonds And Pearls and the annoying rap contributions of Tony M, it started to go downhill, but that album was just OK. This record contains more poor hip-hop attempts and mediocre songs. It has a few very good songs on it, but not enough to save this album.
- HITnRUN Phase One
Another CD I hardly ever played. Prince is flirting with new music styles and sounds. In this case it hurts the quality of the songs. I usually like the experimental side of Prince, but not in this case. HITnRUN Phase Two was surprisingly different and better.
- Emancipation
Announced with some hype that Prince was artistically free again and this was celebrated with a triple disc. My expectations were very high, could this be another Sign O’ The Times? Unfortunately this was not case, not even close. This album contains too many mediocre songs. It’s not all that bad. After I made a playlist with my favorite songs it revealed a great single album, which could probably end up in my top 15. But judging all three discs, it’s not good enough.
- The Chocolate Invasion
In Prince terms, this is a somewhat uninspired and boring record. The difference between The Dance on this record versus the version on 3121 says it all. Potentially this could have been a lot better.
Prince – Xpectation
Vincent’s top 5 least favorite Prince albums
I will keep it short about the least favorite albums. It’s a matter of personal taste whether you like something or not. I don’t like these albums as much, because I don’t have a real Prince feeling about them.
- Xpectation
- The Slaughterhouse
- The Chocolate Invasion
- N.E.W.S.
- The Rainbow Children
