Siba – Parazeitgeist

Review

After the single Dounana went viral, Siba became an artist I continued to follow. Today, her debut album, Parazeitgeist, was released. The film Parazeitgeist premiered on October 20. You can find a link to the video at the bottom of this article.

Siba explains the project and the concept behind Parazeitgeist as follows:

Parazeitgeist is a concept album told through seven interconnected songs, each serving as a chapter in a larger narrative. Together, they form a socio-political critique of the systems and structures that shape our lives, exposing the inequalities, contradictions, and injustices of our time. The album creates a dystopian world inhabited by two central characters: The Protagonist and The System. Their evolving relationship drives the narrative, transforming the album into both a personal journey and a broader reflection on contemporary society.

Musically, Parazeitgeist moves fluidly across genres and sonic landscapes, with each chapter adopting its own distinct sound to deepen the storytelling. Every song is accompanied by a poem, a carefully crafted soundscape, and a rhythmic language that reflects the emotional and narrative developments of that particular chapter. As the story unfolds, the music guides the listener through a dramatic arc, evoking a wide spectrum of emotions while immersing them in the album’s dystopian universe.

The music sounds almost cold and detached, blending industrial electronics, techno, trip-hop, underground rap, and folk music from the Levant. Its message revolves around freedom and oppression, the here and now, corrupt leaders, and the power of money, but also the belief that good will ultimately prevail.

Please mind the gap between the rich and the poor, thank you!
C#1 Arrivals

You fight for the death of peace / So start running after your money And forget about your peace of mind
C#2 The System

I wonder how to survive here / I wonder how to feel love here
C#3 Hunted

A hungry soul, a child dies / The dreadful truth, the filthy lies
C#4 In Captivity We Dream

But oh dear ghost, I have forgotten how to be alive / I see the darkness around me / I observe it / But I know now, that this darkness will not last
C#5 Time To Jump The Wall

Freedom forever, freedom / Oh criminal of the history, call yourself the leader / Did you really think yourself eternally immortal / Have you forgotten that the will of the people will remain your destiny forever
C#6 Bow Down Mr. President

So what remains for me? / and what remains for us? / and what remains for me? / and what remains for love / and me?
C#7 What Remains

For those who loved Dounana, the only track that comes close in terms of instrumentation, anger, and fighting spirit is C#6 Bow Down Mr. President. But please don’t overlook the other tracks. Parazeitgeist is an impressive artistic statement from Siba. The only downside is its length: just 19 minutes and 26 seconds…
