Cat Power in top form always ensures exaltation, deep emotion and wonder. Concerning the show at Utrecht’s intimate Pandora room: 3 strikes out of 3. Once again a beautiful concert by the (50 year old) Chan Marshall (Cat Power) and her band.
For the last few years, it seems like Cat Power feels more and more at ease whenever she’s on stage. It probably was a deliberate choice to dim the lighting on stage as much as possible, but I’ve never before seen her so relaxed.
Whatever the reasoning was, it all resulted in yet another unforgettable night with Cat Power and her voice, that voice that conveys emotions so well, accompanied by a band that’s able to accentuate just the right musical nuances and is still capable of producing a huge noise. The New York – Manhattan diptych was my personal highlight of the evening, an evening that was centered around her latest album Covers, the niche where Cat Power shines: interpreteing work of others by deconstructing the songs only to rebuild them again in her own unique way, which makes for impressive, intimate and intense performances.
For all those who have never seen Cat Power before: go, and experience the magic that is Cat Power.
