Each year on the 30th of August Türkiye remembers the day the nationalist troops, led by Kemal (later to be called Atatürk), won the final battle against the Greeks near Dumlupınar in 1922. The Turkish name for the day is Zafer Bayramı.
In honor of this day the singers Dilek Türkan and Elif Sanchez played a concert in the gardens of the 5 star Swissōtel The Bosphorus in Istanbul, at the beginning of our yearly holiday. We wanted to witness this!
The support-act was shockingly amateuristic and didn’t forebode anything good, but when the band and singers took the stage it was clear that all parties involved were in for a good time. Classic songs, Atatürk loved while alive, were played and sung with great abandon in a modern, remarkably funky, way. A nice show at a special location in the greatest city in the world.
