Unexpectedly, I witnessed a great show. I really don’t know Todd Rundgren’s music that well. I do own the two big 1970s albums (Something/Anything? and A Wizard, A True Star), but that’s about it. Rundgren (77 years old) is one of the originals, who has produced some of the greatest albums of all time. As evidenced by tonight’s show, his solo work is beautiful as well.
The night was filled with music styles that were all over the place: soul, rock, gospel-screams, pirate music(!), rap, acapella songs, moving ballads and the corny Flappie. Highly entertaining. Rundgren was in fine shape vocally, more than fine actually, especially for a 77 year old. The band was supportive and provided first rate background vocals. And, the band just played 2 hours straight: wonderful! Two 4 songs blocks were especially good, exciting and moving.
And, Rundgren had a message to convey, for all the (religious/political) fanatics: Just get over yourself. Duly noted!
