Belgian singer and actor. Initially highly famous in Belgium, France and The Netherlands. He primarily sung in French and occassionally in Dutch. Later his fame reached the entire world. He is commonly recognized as the master of the modern chanson. English translations of his work have been performed by the likes of David Bowie, Scott Walker, Ray Charles, Judy Collins, John Denver, The Kingston Trio, Nina Simone, Shirley Bassey, James Dean Bradfield, Frank Sinatra and Andy Williams
