The idea was beautiful. East meets West, a musical journey that tries to emulate the music, and particulary its experience, from before and bring it to the here and now. Technological gadgets like quadraphonic sound actually did conjour up the right atmosphere.
The start of the show was nothing short of spectacular, the music from Hagia Sofia in 1403 with Roman church music all over the place, followed by Ottoman islamic singing a mere 50 years later.
The six journeys that followed were beautiful, but were less overwhelming. A shame really, because the performance itself was great, sincere and positive: Be curious for other kinds of music and unfamiliar sounds and you will be enriched. A message that resonates, especially in these polarising times. A bit more ‘oomph’ in the performances would have helped to engage the audience a bit more in the musical interpretation.
