American disc jockey (DJ), rapper, and producer, one of the pioneers of early hip-hop and electro-funk. In the mid-1970s, he began organizing parties, initially intended to keep young people away from gang-related activities. He brought together like-minded DJs, rappers, and (graffiti) artists under the name Universal Zulu Nation and formed several hip-hop collectives, including Jazzy 5 and Soulsonic Force.
Inspired by electronic music he began incorporating electronics into his music. On the groundbreaking Planet Rock (1982), he blended funk and hip-hop with electronics, drum machines, and synthesizers. Electro-funk became a genre in its own right. With his following world tour, he introduced hip-hop to audiences around the globe
