Neil Young in Groningen, The Netherlands on the hottest day of the year (so far). By the time the show was over the temperature still was as high as 30ºC. Because of the heat I chose to skip support act Van Morrison (luckily, I have seen him before at North Sea Jazz Festival, 07/07/2023). I gather it was a good show.
But, I did come to see Neil Young. I already knew the setlists from previous shows, so when he opened the show with Ambulance Blues (off one of my favorite albums On The Beach), excitement was huge from the get-go. He joked he hadn’t played it for 100 years (it was the first performance since 2019). Following blistering versions of a fine selection of scorching rockers (Fuckin’ Up!), things slowed down for a moving solo rendition of The Needle And The Damage Done. But soon we were underway for another set of typical, gritty Neil Young guitar songs. The feedbck at the start of songs like Like A Hurricane cuts through the bone and then Old Man takes the show home. With Keep On Rockin’ In The Free World the show reaches its impressive finale.
Neil Young is 79 years of age, but plays to the stars in the scorching heat of Groningen, visibly enjoys himself and moves with his typcial locomotion and his voice sounds astoundingly good. A concert to remember.
