As a little Erwin I was a huge Queen fan. My room was plastered with posters, my allowance was spent on records and singles and for a short period of time I even joined the Dutch Queen fanclub (also see Queen: my very first music love). After Jazz, and more particularly 1979’s Live Killers I was done with Queen. Ik was 13 and other music hit me harder and more direct. Queen faded into the background, ever more. Because of the stunning performance at Live Aid I had a small and short revival. Following Freddie Mercury’s death I started listening again. Lots of the music didn’t have the impact it had when I was young, but both Sheer Heart Attack (1974) and Jazz (1978) turned out to be very strong albums indeed. And, beautitful songs like Somebody To Love and Seven Seas Of Ryhe transport me back to the time I was that little Erwin, time and time again.
I have always regretted not seeing Queen with Freddie Mercury and John Deacon. And then this opportunity came along. Finally witness my youth heroes live. Together with friend Patrick (who did see them in 1984 and 1986) to the Ziggo Dome. A great setlist, perfect playing, good atmosphere, in short: a great night. And, Adam Lambert does a great job. Nice look, fine voice and perhaps even more camp than Freddie Mercury ever was.
