Initially I had decided not to go to this partcilar show (Shelby J…), but some old friends had a spare ticket. A great opportunity to see them again, and who knows, maybe it was good to hear Prince music blasting in a convert venue once again. And, all of that on the 9th commemoration of his untimely passing.
How are you supposed to judge such an event? When going for musicality, entertainment and artistry it’s (inevitably) below par, but given the parameters, it was okay. Candy Dulfer was enthused and felt sincere. Shelby J. will undoubtedly be a very nice woman (she did play with two of the biggest name in black music of the last decades, Prince and D’Angelo), but her way of performing does nothing for me.
The Family on the other hand, were fabulous. Besides songs off the phenomenal debut (also see The Family, the ultimate Prince satellite project), they also played some newer songs. Eric Leeds seemed a bit off, maybe fatigue from the long journey, but he was in da house!
The Family saved the show from mediocrity. Nevertheless: maybe again next year, the 10th commemoration must provide something extra special, no?
