Ellas Otha Bates (also known as Ellas McDaniel)
12/30/1928
06/02/2008
American guitarist who played a key role in the transition from the blues to rock and roll. He was a major influence on artists like Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Animals and The Clash. His unique combination of African rhythms with his own beat are still important building blocks in genres like hip-hop, rock and pop. Bo Diddley was also important for his technical innovations, like the use of tremolo and reverb effects, which were used to optimize the sound of his rectangualr guitars
