Actually, it’s hard to describe how I feel about this show. Just the band entrance alone was enough to forget about the overcrowded, hot venue. All eyes on St. Vincent (Annie Clark) and her band (featuring master drummer Mark Guiliana). The phenomenon that is St. Vincent had landed in Utrecht and we were in for a treat. A beautifully lit Reckless started off the show, which ended in orgasmic noise. Broken Man signaled the second goosebump moment. St. Vincent creamed at  the top of her lungs “What are you looking at??? / What are you looking at???!”. Mesmerizingly exciting.

Highlight upon highlight followed: the gritty, heavy and exciting Flea, the beautiful Violent Times, the nth goosebump moment with New York, up to the conjuring set closer All Born Screaming. And still it wasn’t done. The band returned one more time. An intimate, beautifully sung, Candy Darling, closed the show with yet another goosebump moment.

For a long time now, I wanted to go and see St. Vincent play live. Arguably, I couldn’t have picked a better moment, as St. Vincent reached unspeakable highs. The musical offerings were masterful, perfectly executed and built up beautifully. The set leaned heavy on the combination of synthesizers and the organic instruments, and on songs stemming from the Masseduction and All Born Screaming albums.

To top it all off, St. Vincent proved to be an engaging front woman, who can be pedantic, dangerous, funny, disarming, cool and moving. And, let’s not forget, St. Vincent is an extremely innovative and talented guitar player as well. This is a show I will cherish for a long time!
