Stop elder abuse

Ouderenmishandeling (nursing.nl)

Introduction

Incredible but true. Elder abuse happens to more than 1 in 20 older adults, often caused by immediate family members and/or (grand)children.

Elder Abuse Recognized Too Late

Elder abuse is becoming increasingly common. It is not always about hitting or kicking; sometimes bank cards are taken by (grand)children and large sums of money disappear. Financial abuse is the most common form of elder abuse. Most older adults are abused by their own family and close relatives. Sometimes the perpetrators also have their own issues, such as mental health problems, alcohol problems, or a gambling addiction.

Signs of Elder Abuse

Elder abuse is often recognized too late—or not at all. Sometimes this is because victims feel ashamed or are uncapable of recognizing it, or because people in their surroundings simply do not notice it. These are some warning signs:

  • Visible injuries
  • Startled reactions to unexpected touch
  • Unexplained fear or depression
  • Unexplained expenses
  • Unpaid bills and reminders
  • Empty refrigerator
  • Frightful or withdrawn behavior
