American singer, actor, songwriter and composer. He was one of the creative forces behind the Southern soul music label Stax Records, where he was an in-house songwriter, a session musician and record producer. During the 1960s he partnered with David Porter and together they wrote the Sam & Dave classic Soul Man, which was recognized as one of the most influential songs of the past 50 years by the Grammy Hall of Fame, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Rolling Stone magazine and the Recording Industry Association of America. By the end of the 1960s Hayes started his own career. His first real success was the soundtrack to the movie Shaft. In 1997 Hayes played the character Chef in the animated Comedy Central series South Park, which he continued into 2006. In 2002, Hayes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
