|Tour name||The Big Steppers Tour 2022|
My second show of Kendrick Lamar’s The Big Steppers Tour 2022. Following the fantastic concert at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome 3 weeks earlier, it was time for Antwerp.
Just like in Amsterdam the audience was in the zone from the very first moment. The room exploded when Lamar was visible for the first time. Were there something that stood out that I hadn’t noticed the first time around?
Yes, I had a déjà vu to Prince’s 1995 The Ultimate Live Experience (see March 24 and 25, 1995), where Prince focused on new material. I noticed just how much new material Lamar put into this show. A bold move, because the latest album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers is a fairly introspective affair.
But the audience ate from his hands. So, the choice paid off again. Enthusiasm all around. I had standing room tickets this time, allowing to tap in just how big and grand Lamar has really become. The audience effortlessly rapping and singing along with faces that vividly expressed their emotions: utter ecstasy!
So, why not 5 stars then? Contrary to Amsterdam, the show’s flow felt better. The intervals were shorter. Unfortunatley, the sound wasn’t what it should have been, resulting in loss of some of the finesse in Lamar’s raps. Half point deduction.
But, in the end, Kendrick Lamar once again proved why he is the most exciting and innovative artist of today. Masterful!
